So I stripped it for parts and made a proper one. Below is the weaving of it. Still not perfect tension, but measuring and marking the lengths made a big difference. Except where I made slight mistakes. Oh well.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-711 aligncenter\" title=\"hammock02\" src=\"http:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/hammock02.jpg\" alt=\"the new hammock\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/hammock02.jpg 640w, https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/hammock02-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I made proper harnesses (below) for this one, the same as were on the one we had when I was growing up. I had to do quite a bit of google-reasearch to figure out how to do it, but it turns out to be pretty easy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-712 aligncenter\" title=\"hammock03\" src=\"http:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/hammock03.jpg\" alt=\"the harness\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" srcset=\"https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/hammock03.jpg 640w, https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/hammock03-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I bought a couple of bits of oak from the local joiners and sanded them and drilled them for spreaders. Good thing I happened to have a 12mm chisel bit!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-713\" title=\"hammock04\" src=\"http:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/hammock04.jpg\" alt=\"making the spreader\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/hammock04.jpg 640w, https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/hammock04-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And good thing I have a dremel tool, with a drum sander attachment. Smoothed and rounded all the holes so as not to saw through the ropes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"hammock05\" src=\"http:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/hammock05.jpg\" alt=\"sanding the holes\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Finally, tying it off at each end, with a sailor&#8217;s hitch or some such knot, which I was very good at by the end.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-715\" title=\"hammock06\" src=\"http:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/hammock06.jpg\" alt=\"tying it together\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/hammock06.jpg 480w, https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/hammock06-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And below is the hammock in action. Pretty much everybody gave it a go, but only an elite few (myself included) managed to dump ourselves out of it in proper comedy fashion. Elmo did a lot of paddle-winding and I did a lot of decoratively draping myself along the gates. A fair division of labour, I think.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-717\" title=\"01_canal\" src=\"http:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/01_canal.jpg\" alt=\"Elmo working a lock\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/01_canal.jpg 640w, https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/01_canal-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ryan came along last weekend and, as usual, powered through tons of work. The back wall turns out to be made of bricks behind all that ivy. Who knew?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-718\" title=\"02_back_wall\" src=\"http:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/02_back_wall.jpg\" alt=\"the back wall, ivy free\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/02_back_wall.jpg 640w, https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/02_back_wall-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And Anne came along as well and did some serious path excavation. It&#8217;s amazing how much structure there is under all this lumpy ground, if only you dig it out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-719\" title=\"02_path\" src=\"http:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/02_path.jpg\" alt=\"path where none was previously\" width=\"640\" height=\"853\" srcset=\"https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/02_path.jpg 640w, https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/02_path-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Anne also helped me get a bit done on the mosaic for the backsplash in the kitchen. Then I accidentally started using it as a kitchen again, so it may remain undone for a few weeks, but at least it&#8217;s started. It was lovely to see Anne anyway, I don&#8217;t get to see nearly enough of her.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-720\" title=\"02mosaic\" src=\"http:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/02mosaic.jpg\" alt=\"mosaic\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/02mosaic.jpg 640w, https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/02mosaic-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The rest of the ivy came off the shed roofs, revealing a surprise pair of skylights in the bottom shed, which now beautifully illuminate the interior.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" title=\"03_bottom_shed\" src=\"http:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/03_bottom_shed.jpg\" alt=\"the bottom shed\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">So you can actually see what you&#8217;re doing in there! Amazing. The rafters are all shot to hell, having been in a moist atmosphere above plastic that held the rainwater for years, so they&#8217;ll need a lot of shoring up, but the walls are sound and when the place is re-roofed we&#8217;ll have a lovely workshop.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-721\" title=\"03_bottom_shed2\" src=\"http:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/03_bottom_shed2.jpg\" alt=\"the bottom shed\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/03_bottom_shed2.jpg 640w, https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/03_bottom_shed2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Anna was good enough to agree to climb the tree which will have the trapeze hung from it when we get around to making it. All the parts are present and correct now, which is helpful. Now I just need Elmo to do a lot of complicated splicing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-723\" title=\"04_trapeze\" src=\"http:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/04_trapeze.jpg\" alt=\"Anna up a tree\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/04_trapeze.jpg 640w, https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/04_trapeze-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Alec&#8217;s birthday weekend was fantastic, with great weather and a great crowd. The cake (an experimental clementine and dark chocolate extravaganza) was a success and a good amount of single malt whisky was consumed. Always a sign of a good birthday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-724\" title=\"05_friday-night\" src=\"http:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/05_friday-night.jpg\" alt=\"Friday night\" width=\"480\" height=\"640\" srcset=\"https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/05_friday-night.jpg 480w, https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/09\/05_friday-night-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">And as Steven was around, I made the one dessert I make that doesn&#8217;t even have to be altered to be vegan, my mother&#8217;s apple pie recipe. And I proved to myself that I&#8217;ve still got it in the pastry department. In large, exciting chunks. Boggart Hall, late summer 2012. A very good summer. And I&#8217;m genuinely looking forward to autumn.
