{"id":2005,"date":"2015-07-26T11:34:53","date_gmt":"2015-07-26T11:34:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/?p=2005"},"modified":"2015-07-26T11:34:53","modified_gmt":"2015-07-26T11:34:53","slug":"woodworking","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/?p=2005","title":{"rendered":"Woodworking"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Spent a very well-worth-it day learning about woodworking from the excellent Chris Tribe in Ilkley, who mainly makes high-quality furniture (and teaches other people to do the same) but agreed to spend a day talking to me about window construction.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to talking a lot of theory, we also cut a piece of square wood into a shape suitable for use as a window casing, just to see how joint cutting works and to play with all the cool machines.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"IMG_3376\" src=\"http:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_3376.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"857\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Starting with a square length, we used this excellent table saw (I really want one of these) to cut out a recess for the glass to sit in.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2006\" alt=\"IMG_3375\" src=\"http:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_3375.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"857\" srcset=\"https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_3375.jpg 640w, https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_3375-477x640.jpg 477w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And then cut it into lengths suitable for working with on practice finger joints.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"IMG_3377\" src=\"http:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_3377.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"857\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We then used a router table (I really want one of these) and a jig to remove all the bits of wood that shouldn&#8217;t be there.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2008\" alt=\"IMG_3378\" src=\"http:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_3378.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"857\" srcset=\"https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_3378.jpg 640w, https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_3378-477x640.jpg 477w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For the mortice (if it were a mortice and tenon joint) we used one router bit, the name of which escapes me.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2010\" alt=\"IMG_3382\" src=\"http:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_3382.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"857\" srcset=\"https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_3382.jpg 640w, https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_3382-477x640.jpg 477w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And, having done that and used a special measuring-marking-tool-thingie to mark the opposite piece, we prepared to cut out the other bits. It&#8217;s all very technical&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2015\" alt=\"IMG_3383\" src=\"http:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_3383.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"857\" srcset=\"https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_3383.jpg 640w, https:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_3383-477x640.jpg 477w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A different router bit this time, chewed away the bits from around the tenon.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"IMG_3384\" src=\"http:\/\/donatedhouse.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/IMG_3384.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"857\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This guy would never be short of sawdust for a composting toilet. I was fully satisfied with the fit, although Chris said it was a bit loose.
